How to Install Bifold Windows

 Source

Bifold windows are very popular for their security and energy efficiency, however with the many choices available today choosing the right one for your home is not always as simple as it may seem. The fact is that there are many things to consider before deciding on which window would best suit your needs and how it will look in your home. For starters you need to take into account the type of material that the frame is made out of. This can be either aluminum or vinyl bifold windows.

Vinyl bifold window systems are much more common than you might think, although they are certainly less expensive than aluminum bifold. The biggest difference between them is in the cost per panel. With an aluminum bifold system the cost is nearly double with vinyl. However, when it comes to energy efficiency it is the aluminum which is better; it uses eighty percent less energy than vinyl. And because it is so efficient, your monthly heating bill will be considerably lower.

The aluminum window systems were originally designed as bi-folding window systems, which meant two panels could be opened whilst still keeping the remaining panels closed. However, as time progressed other design changes have been made and now bifold window systems can be bi-fold or completely bi-fold and either open or close as required. This is quite a recent development which has seen improvements in the way these types of systems work which has also meant there are many different styles of fold that can be purchased. Although you might initially opt for a standard bi-fold; this will only provide you with a reduced level of security and therefore some people find it is easier to buy a fully bi-folding unit.

Once you have decided on the style of bifold window that you want you need to choose the type of frame that you will use. There are several different materials that are used to make the frames of the bifold door. The most common ones are either aluminium or steel. Steel is generally used more commonly due to the fact that it is lighter, stronger and it can usually support larger loads. Aluminium is more expensive but it is the more preferred due to the fact that it is more durable, lightweight and it is available in a variety of finishes. Of course there are some people who prefer wood for their own reasons.

The next step is to consider what type of glass will be used in your bifold door. In most cases it will be a combination of two different types of glass such as a glass pane with a half window frame and then a full glass pane with a half window frame. In most cases the thickness of the glass is going to be approximately twenty-six millimeters, which is the thickness required to make sure the door cannot swing out. It is therefore essential to measure the width and height of the door and work from there.

The next step is to take the measurements of the glass on the inside of the frame. You will then have to figure out how far the glass will extend outside the frame. In most cases the thickness of the glass that is required for your bifold door will be between one and three millimetres, so it is important to get this measurement right. You may need to add an extra four millimetres to this measurement if you are going to use a sliding door. If you are going to use a bi-fold then the measurement is going to become even more important because you are going to need additional space for the door to open. Measure the width again and then take the measurements of the outside frames.

The next thing you need to do is to place the glass onto the frame and align it. If you have not done this before then it is probably a good idea to China WDMA practice first on pieces of glass that are slightly smaller. You should also make sure that the glass is lined up correctly so that when you align the frame to the glass it is perfectly even. The alignment should be correct because the glass is going to be in contact with each other during the opening and closing process.

Once the glass is lined up correctly, you will be ready to install the bifold window. You should follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the bifold doors or bi-fold doors for the exact procedure. You can now take the glass and slide it onto the frame where you have just cut it. The two arms of the bifold window should be able to hang down by about six inches. This will ensure that the glass stays in place and that it can support the weight of the door on top of it.
